The Complete Resume Guide for 2026

Everything you need to write, format, and optimise a resume that gets interviews — for both beginners and experienced professionals.

What makes a great resume in 2026?

A great resume in 2026 does three things well. First, it passes ATS screening — the automated software that filters out up to 75% of applications before a human ever reads them. Second, it communicates your value clearly and quickly — recruiters spend an average of 7 seconds on an initial resume scan. Third, it is visually clean and professional — not cluttered, not over-designed, not filled with unnecessary information.

The fundamentals have not changed: your resume should be one page for under 10 years of experience, clearly structured with standard section headings, and tailored to the specific role you are applying for.

The right structure for your resume

1

Contact Information

Your name, professional email, phone number, city and country, LinkedIn URL. Do not include your full street address. Do not include a photo if applying in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia.

2

Professional Summary

2-3 sentences at the top of your resume that position you for the specific role. Mention your years of experience, your core skill set, and one key achievement. Tailor this for every application.

3

Work Experience

List in reverse chronological order. Include company name, job title, dates, and 3-5 bullet points per role. Focus on achievements and impact, not just responsibilities.

4

Education

Degree, institution, and graduation year. If you graduated more than 5 years ago, keep this section brief. Include relevant certifications here too.

5

Skills

A concise list of hard skills relevant to the role. Include tools, software, languages, and methodologies. Mirror the terminology used in job descriptions.

6

Optional Sections

Projects, publications, awards, volunteer work, or languages. Only include if directly relevant to the role and if you have space on one page.

7 resume mistakes that get you rejected

Using a creative or unusual template
ATS systems struggle with columns, tables, text boxes, and unusual fonts. Stick to a clean single-column or simple two-column layout.
Writing responsibilities instead of achievements
"Responsible for managing social media" tells recruiters nothing. "Grew Instagram following by 340% in 12 months" tells them everything.
Not tailoring your resume for each role
Sending the same resume to every job reduces your chances significantly. At minimum, update your summary and add keywords from the job description.
Including a photo in markets where it hurts you
In the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, photos can trigger unconscious bias concerns and get your resume discarded. Know your market.
Making it longer than one page unnecessarily
Unless you have more than 15 years of highly relevant experience, keep it to one page. Recruiters do not read page two.
Using the same bullet points for every application
Your bullets should reflect the language and priorities of each specific role. AI tools make this fast and easy.
Missing contact details or using an unprofessional email
Make sure your email looks professional. firstname.lastname@gmail.com is fine. partyguy1999@hotmail.com is not.

Formatting rules that actually matter

Font and size

Use a clean sans-serif font like Calibri, Arial, or DM Sans at 10-12pt for body text. Your name can be 18-22pt. Avoid decorative fonts entirely.

White space

Do not cram your resume full of text. White space makes it easier to scan and looks more professional. Margins of at least 0.75 inches on all sides.

Consistent formatting

Every job entry should follow the same format. Every bullet should start with an action verb. Dates should all use the same format (e.g. Jan 2022 — Mar 2024).

File format

Always submit as PDF unless the employer specifically requests Word. PDF preserves your formatting across all devices and operating systems.

Your resume, done right. In under a minute.
